Contrary to popular belief, corsairs are not actually pirates. Yes, they attacked ships, but only those that were hostile to the French crown. They had a special charter issued by the king himself, which allowed them to attack any ship of any country except France. The pirates did not neglect anything; they could even attack their own merchant ships. The death penalty was applied to pirates in the 16th century, when corsair activity was especially widespread.
